Accelerated Reader is a computer based program that helps teachers manage and monitor children’s independent reading practise and aims to develop reading for pleasure for all. At Parkside we use Accelerated Reader from Year 2 – 6.
How does it work?
At the beginning of each half term all children will take a short ‘Star Test’ (comprehension questions) using an iPad. It is the result of the ‘Star Test’ which determines the current reading ability of a child and provides them with their ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development). They will use this ZPD to choose books within their book level. The ZPD is a continuum so is able to provide children with challenge without causing frustration.
Once the children are aware of their ZPD and reading range, they are able to independently choose books within that range, rather than having one assigned to them. The children then take that book home to read.
Once the children have carefully read the book, they are able to take an comprehension quiz using an iPad. Depending on the length of the book the quiz length can vary from 3, 5 or 10 questions. Please find some example questions below. Once the children have completed the quiz they will receive instant feedback with their results, including the opportunity to review inaccurate answers.
Accelerated Reader also gives parents the opportunity to be involved in their child’s learning journey. If you would like to receive instant feedback of your child’s quiz scores. Please follow the link below to set up your account. Click on the stars.
